I had the great pleasure of being a guest on the Colin McEnroe show today on WNPR. The discussion was lively and informative, and we had some interesting calls.
The show, which lasted an hour, raised some interesting issues and a few questions that we still can’t answer. We still don’t know the why or how of food allergies, whether breast feeding helps or hurts, or why food allergies are becoming more prevalent. Importantly, there still remains no cure.
While Dr. Mendelson, another guest on the show, promotes immunotherapy for some food allergies, that therapy is not appropriate for the most severely allergic children, like my son. And while airborne contact with allergens may be unlikely, the causal contract and reaction from food residues remains a serious and life threatening issue.
To address the concerns one caller, it’s true that my son’s food allergies are our problem and not yours. However, I believe in compassion and citizenship. I believe in the “golden rule.” And I really, truly believe in karma.
